James Hott Ruebush (1865–1948) was a key figure in American gospel music and education. As associate editor of The Musical Million and leader in the Ruebush-Kieffer music publishing company, he promoted shape-note singing and gospel traditions. He also served as president of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music (1910–1922), advancing music education across the South. This hymn is typical of the American style of the late nineteenth century.
