Johannes Brahms’ O Schöne Nacht (“O Lovely Night”) is a part song for mixed chorus and piano. This nocturne is based on the text from poet George Friederich Daumer of whom Brahms knew personally and collaborated with for multiple compositions throughout their lives.
This piece effectively highlights each voice and instrumental part individually while seamlessly blending harmonies with text and creating tension in the rhythm with the use of hemiolas to create a false sense of mixed meter which was appropriate for this late-Romantic composer.
