Unifier was inspired by an appreciation for the live audience and includes a part for them to playback an audio track on their phones. The music is built on three grooves which are borrowed from drummers from three transformative live music experiences I had in the aftermath of the pandemic, as we began to return to live music after many months of isolation and virtual events. Groove 1 comes from April Camlin's drum beat in Walled Garden by Wume. Groove 2 comes from Dan Bukvich's beat on a tune he wrote for the Palouse Jazz Project called Moving Violation. Groove 3 comes from one of the beats in Navin Chettri's composition The Mountain Tickled My Feet. As the music unfolds, the three grooves vie for dominance, rising to a chaotic cacophony before the audience brings everyone together around a unifying sonority.
