This vocalise was originally composed for Sylvia McNair and cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 1995. Previn, a pianist, film composer and infamous performer of American Songbook broke into a new space with this short work. Originally for cello and voice, the harmonization is not something audiences can immediately grasp, and is left wanting more with what seems like an unfinished or incomplete final phrase. Opening in G minor, the piece wanders to a place without tonal home while maintaining its charm throughout.
