Meditation I
Ewa Fabiańska-Jelińska

For piano, clarinet, trombone and double bass (2016)

Discreet and delicate sounds initiate the piece, resulting from touching the piano dampers, pressing the sustain pedal or touching the strings of the instrument. The palette of original ways of shaping the sound gradually expands with the introduction of subsequent instruments and the development of their parts; as the trombone enters, one can hear a rhythmic whisper and the bell of the instrument being struck, the cello part begins with hitting the soundboard, and the clarinet, with regular breathing through the mouthpiece. Sounds of a defined pitch gradually emerge from the sounds of sonoristic origin, and their long resonance — smoothly turning into silence (especially in the leading piano part) — evokes a contemplative mood.
