Christus, Op. 97
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

Mendelssohn’s Christus, left incomplete at the time of his early death, reflects his lifelong admiration for Johann Sebastian Bach. The writing combines reverent Baroque-inspired counterpoint with Mendelssohn’s expressive Romantic warmth. What survives suggests a masterwork interrupted: serene, noble and filled with spiritual depth. The excerpt performed today tells of the birth of Christ.
