Emma Lou Diemer’s piece for five timpani is rather unique, showing off techniques like glissandos, quick pitch changes, using the back of the sticks and using different instruments like jingle bells and tambourine, and dropping a ball onto one of the timpani. She wrote different ways to play certain passages, in which the performer has autonomy to choose how to play certain parts of the piece.
