With Dessécher, commissioned in 2025 by Christopher Boxall, I hope to fill a niche in the expansive literature for solo percussion for a work that is mostly quiet and contemplative, but grounded by a sense of pulse and propelled by organic development. Starting solely with material of definite pitch from the vibraphone and gradually devolving into more brittle and diffuse textures of indefinite pitch from the remaining instruments, the work explores a process of "drying out" of musical material — wringing pitch and expressivity from the opening motives of the work and becoming ever more rhythmically scattered in the process. This reflects the time in which I wrote the piece — starting in autumn, with leaves still on the trees, and ending in winter, with leaves blown across the ground by gusts of wind — images which might be a useful visualization of the work for listeners as well.
