The Road Home

The Road Home is one of Stephen Paulus’s most beloved choral works. Written in 2001, it is based on the American folk hymn tune Prospect, originally collected in Southern Harmony (1835). Paulus pairs the tune with a reflective text by poet Michael Dennis Browne. The piece begins simply, gradually building through rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines before returning to a quiet conclusion. The music evokes themes of journey, homecoming, and spiritual belonging.
