William Cahn

William Cahn, a member of the NEXUS percussion group since 1971, has performed with numerous major orchestras throughout his career. This work was composed during his time at the Eastman School of Music as part of his senior recital and draws clear inspiration from tabla rhythms and techniques. Many timpani works have similarly been influenced by Indian drumming traditions, including Tiger Tala and Six Concert Pieces for Solo Timpani. In this piece, listeners should pay attention to the intricate accent patterns and the distinctive sound produced by striking the center of the drumhead. Extended techniques such as finger rolls and pitch bending achieved by altering tension while the drum resonates add further depth and expressiveness to the performance.
