Completed in 1879, Brahms’s first violin sonata is often called the “Rain Sonata” because of its connection to two of his earlier songs, Regenlied (Rain Song) and Nachklang (Echo).
The sonata unfolds with an intimate, lyrical character. Its opening movement introduces gently flowing themes, followed by an expressive Adagio. The final movement recalls musical material from the earlier movements, bringing the work to a reflective and deeply personal conclusion.
