Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra (1992)

Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra Alexander Arutunian was born in September of 1920 in Yerevan, First Republic of Armenia. In his early teens he was admitted to the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan where he studies piano with Olga Babashian and composition with Sergi Barkhourdarian and Varkes Talian graduating just prior to World War II. Following the war, he enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory and studied composition with Ilya Litinsky, Nikolai Peyko, and Viktor Zuckermann where his graduation work was awarded the U.S.S.R. State Prize. One of his most successful works, the Trumpet Concerto in A-flat Major was written in 1950. During his music career he was the artistic director of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra, taught composition at the Komitas Conservatory, composed film scores and was a professor at the Yerevan Academy. The Tuba Concerto was written in 1992 following his retirement from the Armenian Philharmonic and was commissioned by Yamaha Corporation and Editions BIM. It is dedicated to Roger Bobo, former tubist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The work consists of three movements in fast–slow–fast sonata form, is tonal in nature and demands a high tessitura from the performer.
