Campbell’s Symphonic Dances takes snare drum excerpts from three different pieces and adapts them for a three-movement solo. The first movement is inspired by “I. The Birth of Kijé” from Lieutenant Kijé Suite, op. 60 by Sergei Prokofiev. Movement II pays tribute to “II. Giuoco delle coppie” from Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, and the final movement is an homage to the third and fourth movements of Scheherazade, op. 35 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
To me, this piece represents my first experiences listening to music that spotlighted percussion instruments, particularly in the classical and classic rock genres. It also highlights my ever-growing curiosity to learn more about the percussion world and my drive to perform as a musician.
