Charlene Romano
Piccolo, Flute, Alto Flute

Flutist Charlene Romano serves as adjunct associate professor of musicianship at Shenandoah Conservatory, is an active performer, and maintains a vibrant private flute studio. She is currently serving as secretary of the National Flute Association.

Romano has held positions with the North (San Francisco) Bay Opera Orchestra, the California Wind Orchestra, the Solano Symphony, and has performed with the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra, the Sacramento Ballet, and many others. She has recorded on the Cantilena label and is featured on documentary soundtracks and California Wind Orchestra recordings for broadcast.

Most recently, Romano developed and implemented the new musicianship sequence for Shenandoah Conservatory’s renowned musical theatre program. She is delighted to participate in this production alongside many of her musicianship students!

Professor Romano has been twice named a SUperWoman of Shenandoah University by the [Not Just] Women's Center. She serves as faculty advisor to the Gamma Gamma Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, and in 2020 served as the adjunct representative for the Emergency Preparation for Online Operations Committee.

Professor Romano's performance-based approach to teaching aural skills is profiled in the new groundbreaking theory pedagogy text, Teaching Music Theory – New Voices and Approaches (Oxford). Romano's case study, “Accommodating Dyslexia in the Aural Skills Classroom”, was published in The Routledge Companion to Music Theory Pedagogy in 2019. Professor Romano has also published several pedagogical articles in Flute Talk, The Flute View and The Double Reed, including an “Ask the Pro” column in Flute Talk advising students on how to prepare for and succeed in college music theory. She is a sought after clinician and adjudicator.
