Ricercare No. 3 (1689)
Domenico Gabrielli

Domenico Gabrielli, considered to be one of the first cello virtuosi, studied with Franceschini whom he succeeded as cellist at S Petronio in 1680. He was also a noted composer, having studied composition with Legrenzi. Of his compositions, his most significant may have been his works for cello which include the seven Ricerari and are some of the first works written for the newly evolving instrument. Ricercare translates from Italian as "to search out." These works often serve a preludial function to a following piece but may also exhibits traits of toccatas, fugues, canons or seem improvisatory in nature. A Ricercare may also serve as a study exploring a technical device for playing an instrument.
