Lunar Lullaby
Jacob Naverud

Kathleen Nicely’s imaginative text speaks of a “radiant, celestial child” as composer Naverud’s piano accompaniment, in constant motion, offers support and contrast to the flowing melodies and full, closely dissonant choral harmonies of the singers. December’s full moon has a high trajectory in the sky, shining above the horizon for longer than most full moons. This full moon is also called the Cold Moon — fitting this time of year, when cold weather begins to settle in around us (Farmer’s Almanac, 2022). The moon’s phases mark the passing of time in the night sky. As the Winter Solstice approaches we celebrate fire and light, birth and death, the rising sun and the moon.
