I’ve been listening to Elliott Smith since childhood (shout out to my mom) and while this is for sure his most overdone song, it’s still a beautiful tune. Elliott Smith explores motifs of self hatred and self doubt in the context of comforting a friend. “People you’ve been before that you don’t want around anymore, they push and shove and won’t bend to your will… I’ll keep them still”
I remember walking my dog as a very depressed teenager and singing along to this song (and many other Elliott Smith songs) and finding solace in his lyrics voicing all of the feelings I was drowning in.
