“Puppet? Why So?” is sung by Hermia in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a role which I have had the pleasure of covering for this weekend’s full stage opera production. In this excerpt, Hermia slowly and viciously bites back at her lifelong best friend Helena’s jabs towards her character and love life. Although the aria is short, it is my favorite from the score for its climaxing emotion and relativity to sibling rivalry.
