Crucified
Jane Gowen

Jesus, were You crucified for this:
for a moment when I can’t exist
without twistin’ Your words
into somethin’ that doesn’t hurt?

Were sinners just like someone You could grow to love?
And didn’t You look back before You chose the cross?
Oh my God, it’s more than I am worthy of:
You walked into sufferin’ I’m runnin’ from.

Jesus, oh was it hard when You heard
the Father say, “There’s nothing to learn.
I just want to give you all you need.”
‘Cuz I think I heard You say that to me.

And I wasn’t just someone You could grow to love
when I sold Your body and I stole Your blood.
I am Your beloved, and I always was.
Nothing would have stopped You–
not my givin’ up.
Oh, I feel like givin’ up…

Jesus, am I crucified in this?
Can I daily die and be alive–
my body survive, but it’s not mine?
Take this, Jesus!
Take it in Your time.
