The Leek
"...to wear the leek upon Saint Davy's day."

Wearing the leek in one's cap was a customary celebration of a 12th century Welsh victory over Saxon soldiers. It is said that St. David himself ordered his soldiers to wear the leek in their helmets to distinguish them from the enemy, which enabled them to score a great victory. Wearing the leek on St. David's day — traditionally March 1st — is a statement of Welsh pride.
