James earned a Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design and Technology at West Virginia University and a bachelor's at DeSales University. He designed for Monumental Theatre Company (Pippin) which was nominated with four Helen Hayes Awards. James designed In The Heights at Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre in 2017, which was nominated for Broadway World Regional Awards- Baltimore for Best Scenic Design. He set designed Cabaret in 2020 for Ovations Theatre of Rockville, Maryland, was nominated for Broadway Regional Awards – DC for Set Design of the Decade (Non-Equity).
