This piece is very dear to my heart and has dramatically changed the way I approach playing the marimba. It was created by Julie Spencer in 1987 and uses a technique she developed called the “relaxed concentration technique.” The heart of this solo is the groove and feeling relaxed and in control. Unlike most pieces I play, this one is not a romantic piece, instead is a process piece created out of improvisation. A really fun surprise of this piece is that I do improvise a section of it! This is something I never thought I would be able to do and am so proud of the word I have done to feel comfortable improvising live. This technique and piece has been so impactful to my playing that I am also presenting on it in a festival in Mississippi this March.
