Christopher Burchett
Director

Christopher Burchett is directing his second production with the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, following last fall’s highly successful "Le nozze di Figaro". He is currently completing his final semester of doctoral work at UK. Before arriving in Lexington, Christopher enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career as a baritone, performing with leading companies and orchestras across the United States and Europe, including the London Philharmonic, New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Beth Morrison Projects, The Estates Theatre, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, BBC Orchestra, Fort Worth Opera, the Holland Festival, Prototype Festival, Palm Beach Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Virginia Opera, Opera Omaha, Opera Saratoga, Indianapolis Opera, Kentucky Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Over the course of his career, he sang more than 105 operatic roles—14 of them world premieres.

More recently, Christopher has transitioned to the 'other side of the table', leading UK’s undergraduate opera workshop program. With this ensemble, he has directed and designed both large-scale scenes programs and full productions, including Menotti’s "The Medium" and Edwin Penhorwood’s "Too Many Sopranos". This spring, he will introduce a new course at UK entitled "Audition Techniques", designed to prepare aspiring singers not only to succeed in auditions but also to be invited back. In addition, Christopher serves on the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University, where he teaches voice and lyric diction.
