“The Power of Teamwork: A Panel on the Commission and Collaboration Process”
Taylor Hicks and Ian Lester
A roundtable/panel presentation on the commission and consortium process for both students and professionals, focusing on encouraging young players to get involved in the creation of new music. Current regional composers, performers, and frequent commissioners will lend their wisdom and experience to the panel. The discussion will cover topics including the differences between commissions and consortiums, the interactions between artist and composer, the creative process in general, historic examples in our repertoire, as well as recent examples of commissioning experiences from the panel to illustrate the critically important and thriving legacy of seeking out new repertoire for our instruments. This would be an opportunity for the attendees to get insight from composers on how to start the process of commissioning, for those that are interested in composing to get advice from active composers of a similar age, ask performers how they approach working on new music, and to ask any questions about commissioning or creating new music that they might have.
