OPERALEX

THE MISSION OF OPERALEX

Who are we? What do we do? Why do we do it?

OperaLex is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the support and promotion of opera in the Bluegrass, primarily through the support of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre.

OperaLex supports the Opera Theatre program with significant financial contributions, which supplements that of the School of Music and the College of Fine Arts and used by the opera program to:

  • Defray the costs of production – scenery, costumes, and lighting;
  • Provide support for the UKOT students through scholarships and personal interaction;
  • Engage professional singers and directors to work with its talented students on stage and in the studio;
  • Present artists-in-schools, grade level opera in the Commonwealth’s schools through the Schmidt Opera Outreach Program (SOOP);
  • Host the Kentucky District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, leading the stars of the future through regional competitions to the national finals on the stage of the Met in New York City; and
  • Support the program’s recruiting of outstanding young singers at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
