Nicholas Cowden

Nicholas Cowden began his ballet studies at the age of 9 at the Virginia Ballet Company in Fairfax, and later Southold Dance Theatre in South Bend, Indiana. In 2014, a scholarship brought him to the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre under the tutelage of Franco DeVita & Raymond Lukens. Cowden joined The Washington Ballet as a trainee in 2016, was promoted to Studio Company in 2018, and the main company in 2022.

His repertoire with The Washington Ballet includes George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Theme & Variations, Serenade, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, and The Prodigal Son; Fredrick Ashton’s Birthday Offering, and The Dream; Choo San Goh’s Fives; John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet; Merce Cunningham’s Duets; Julie Kent’s Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty; Septime Webre’s The Nutcracker. Cowden has also originated roles in Jessica Lang’s Coloring Silent Space, and Beethoven Serenade; Silas Farley’s Such Sweet Thunder, Dowland Dances, and Werner Sonata; Dwight Rhoden’s Midnight Riff.
