Hirofumi Tanaka, originally from Tokyo, Japan, joined the Virginia Symphony as 4th horn at the beginning of 2022-23 season. Prior to this, he has performed as one-year 4th horn with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra during 2021-22 season. As a freelancer, he has performed with ensembles including the Arizona Opera, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Houston Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, and San Antonio Symphony.

He holds Bachelor of Music degree from University of Cincinnati, and Master of Music degree from the Rice University.
