First performed in 1892, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker is a musical retelling of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. In the ballet, a young girl named Clara receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. The nutcracker transforms into a prince, and the pair travels to the beautiful Land of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The story unfolds as a continuous dreamscape, with the Overture unlocking a child’s shimmering fantasy. Innocence gives way to excitement in The Battle, as Clara’s beloved nutcracker leads toy soldiers into combat with the fearsome Mouse King. After the nutcracker becomes a prince, Clara’s Pas de Deux brings to life a moment of awakening between the girl and her rescuer. Celebration arrives in the elegant, sweeping Waltz, often called the Waltz of the Flowers. The ballet concludes in an Apotheosis, as Clara’s dream dissolves with the morning light.
