Scott Harris, current Assistant Principal Bass since 2014, was Principal Bass for the previous 23 seasons with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He joined the orchestra the year Maestro JoAnn Falletta assumed the music directors position. During his tenure with the orchestra, he has performed the Koussevitsky concerto with Maestro Falletta and the Dragonetti concerto with staff conductor Robert Shoup. He has performed chamber music with the Virginia Arts Festival. Mr. Harris performed as a section bassist with many orchestras in his freelance career prior to moving to Virginia. Including the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida and the Charlotte (N.C.) Symphony as well as the Atlanta Symphony on their outdoor concerts.
While primarily an orchestral player, Scott has collaborated with Singer-songwriter’s as well. He has worked with Hampton Roads residents Charlton Phaneuf and Julie Clark. He has worked with Keller Williams on his early album, “Spun”. Mr. Harris has held teaching positions at Old Dominion University, Hampton University, and the Virginia academy of music. Mr. Harris has held principal positions with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Macon (GA.) Symphony.
He is active today as a teacher privately and is proud to serve the community with the Virginia Symphony’s outreach programs. His teachers include the late Ralph Jones of the Atlanta Symphony, Peter Rofe of the LA Philharmonic and Lew Norton of the New York Philharmonic, while at the Manhattan School of music. Mr. Harris studied performance at Manhattan School and Georgia State University.
