Founded in Norfolk, Virginia in 1920, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra continues to challenge expectations and push the boundaries of what an American orchestra can be. The VSO is the largest professional performing arts organization in southeastern Virginia, bringing its artistic excellence to 1.8 million people across 17 distinct cities. Through appearances at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and its commitment to adventurous programming, the orchestra has garnered media coverage including The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and BBC Worldwide News. Recent recordings have featured collaborations with banjoist Béla Fleck and violinist Gil Shaham.

Appointed in 2021, Music Director Eric Jacobsen, The Macon and Joan Brock Chair, continues to expand the VSO’s vision to attract wider audiences with engaging concert experiences and innovative programming. Rounding out the artistic leadership team are Connie and Marc Jacobson Music Director Laureate JoAnn Falletta, and Norfolk native Thomas Wilkins in the role of Principal Guest Conductor, reflecting the VSO’s commitment to tell its communities’ stories.
