First heard in 1882, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera The Snow Maiden tells the beautiful story of an enchanting creature made of snow who longs for love and the warmth of human companionship. Rimsky-Korsakov contrasts the frosty beauty of the Russian winter landscape with the Snow Maiden’s fantastic transformation as she moves between the mythological and human realms, as elements of Russian folk music blend with the composer’s trademark orchestration to bring her intense emotion to life. One of the most famous pieces from the opera, “The Dance of the Tumblers” takes place in Act II during a scene at the village fair, as a jester leads tumblers in a vigorous, acrobatic dance. The lively and energetic music is an upbeat counterpoint to the Snow Maiden’s serious and ultimately tragic tale.
