Maestro Brackens has served as master musician, composer, arranger, teacher and mentor for more than 30 years. A native Clevelander, he holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, and a master’s degree in education from Cambridge University in Boston, Massachusetts. He has also completed post-graduate courses from Cambridge University, where he was appointed Dean of Students for the summer evening programs. Maestro Brackens is one of the founding teachers at the Cleveland School of the Arts. For nearly two decades he taught music in public schools. He also served on the faculty of the Rev. James Cleveland's Gospel Music Workshop of America. He grew up in the historic Gethsemane Baptist Church, where the Rev. Glenn T. Settle founded the Wings Over Jordan Choir in the 1930's. It was at Gethsemane that Brackens launched his career in the music ministry. He is also the founder-director of the acclaimed Wings Over Jordan Celebration Choir. In 2022, Maestro Brackens started The Wings Over Jordan Performing Arts Summer Camp for students in grades 3 through 12. The goal of the Camp is to highlight the performing arts disciplines in order to help stimulate, motivate and encourage students to improve academic and life skills. His artistic versatility is further evidenced by the fact that he has served as music director for productions at Karamu House, the Cleveland Art Theatre, the Paul Robeson Theatre in Buffalo, New York, and many other venues. Maestro Brackens has recorded CD's including “Step Chillun”, “Strengthened Within”, and “Christmas Time: A Joyous Christmas Celebration.” He also had the opportunity to work on the MA'AFA Project which paid tribute to our ancestors who journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean to America as slaves. His future endeavors include authoring a combination book and CD entitled “Miracles” which will culminate with a World Tour that focuses on Organ Transplant Donorship. Maestro Brackens is excited to be a part of the production of “The Amen Corner”, and to honor the artistic contributions of James Baldwin.
