Star Wars: Through the Years (2016)
John Williams (b. 1932)

No collection of music from film has had more of an impact on our culture, our everyday lives, and the future of cinema than the score to the Star Wars franchise. When Star Wars arrived in movie theatres in 1977, the style for Hollywood was to go cheap – classic rock, small jazz, groups, and electronic music dominated the background music of the movies of the time. George Lucas had other ideas, bringing John Williams into his sci-fi project with the intent of creating a swooping, romantic and neoclassical score that would rival the great works of the early century cinema.

Not only did Williams succeed in doing just that, but his themes for the Force, Luke, Leia, Yoda, and, of course, Darth Vader, would become a part of everyday life, from ring tones to screen savers, to imagery passed along from generation to generation. No other collection has the allure and effect than that of the Academy-Award winning score to the Star Wars franchise, and it firmly entrenches John Williams as one of the most important classical music composers of the 20th century.
