I’m incredibly blessed. The opportunity to direct this show came at the right time, and I’m grateful. With this show, I wanted to ensure that the words and music were at the forefront of everything we did. I sat down with my actors and gave them my overall vision for the show when we started, and after hearing them sing this music for the first time, my vision changed. This story is told by people who have lived multiple lives. In those lives, there is a connection to each of them that cannot be explained in words alone but in the actions that they have taken. Each of these actions is about one moment. For me, the “New World” that they continue to reference is purgatory. The stories being told go from confusion and wonder to acceptance. It is a beautiful reminder of how our decision to do or not do something can impact not only our own lives but the lives of those closest to us as well. This show means a lot to so many in the community. I know that it would have meant so much to Emily Melton as well. Her tremendous love for the arts was infectious, and her love for the people on these Upstate stages was unmatched. Bert, we love you; we are here for you. This one is for you, Emily. Thank you for believing in us.
