From "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood
A camera is a mechanical instrument. It's not useful without its operator. (Yes, the digital world and remote controls/timers have changed things a bit, but still someone, somewhere is operating the camera.) But think of the thousands (or millions) of lives that can be touched by just one camera. Can the images outlive the camera or vice versa? And how many cameras have chronicled the 50 fabulous years of activity here in the Kweskin Theatre?
When Stamford's community theatre found its permanent home here at Sterling Farms, the building we're in today was known simply as The Sterling Barn Theatre. Two years later, upon the death of local arts activist and actress, Ethel Kweskin - and upon a gift from her husband, Sydney - the name was changed to the Ethel Kweskin Sterling Barn Theatre. Syd stayed involved in the theatre for almost 25 more years until his passing in 1998 when the theatre took on its current homage to the family name.
Thinking back to the idea that a camera is nothing with its operator, similarly, a great musical is nothing without its players. But how wonderful are the players without an audience? (Does a tree make a noise when it falls if no one is there to hear it?)
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary in the theatre's history, we are so thankful to you, our loyal fans. But thankful also to our City leaders - past and present - who understand the value the arts bring to the community. Thanks to our many financial supporters, too. But lest you forget, thank you to the brilliant artists on and off the stage who volunteer to entertain us.
Fifty may be considered the "golden" anniversary to some, but for me, the richness of gold is here every day, surrounded by theatre lovers. Here's to another 50 years and beyond.
Enjoy the show,
