"Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart." Anne Frank
During the darkest days of the pandemic, I did my best to remain optimistic amid the fear and dread of a crazy new disease taking lives around the world. I worried about the future of Curtain Call as our stages were darkened.
Those days seem like a walk in the park compared to the daily life of Anne Frank and thousands of others living in fear and dread of a different killer. Her seemingly indomitable spirit comes through her writings which are the basis for this play.
Like many other historically-based theatre pieces, The Diary of Anne Frank presents an uncomfortable history lesson, yet it's a story that shouldn't be forgotten. In some respects, the more recent Broadway musical, Come From Away, is similar as it tells the tale of the days following 9/11. While those of us so close to NYC were living with fear and anger, playing out in Newfoundland was a story of the resilient spirit and the goodness of humankind.
How we cope with the unthinkable, defines us. Anne's writings certainly define her. Working on this play the first time 14 years ago, I learned so much from reading the full text of her diary. Visiting the annex was also an incredible experience. If you want to learn more use this link https://www.annefrank.org/en/anne-frank/ for a virtual tour of the annex.
Thank you for being here.
