Welcome

TRADITION!!!

A life in the theatre is full of traditions...opening night rituals...the wishing of broken legs...legacy robes...cards, flowers, etc.. And that's just a small part of my life.

Some traditions may feel restraining; some may bring comfort. The traditions that Tevye and his fellow villagers follow are a little bit of both. The comfort gives them strength to endure difficult times, yet they feel restraining as the younger generation starts to explore new ideas.

Traditions abound in my family, especially as related to various holidays. As time has passed, some traditions have disappeared: a favorite regular July 4th celebration of my youth passed when my aunt moved from her home that was perfectly situated to see Stamford's fireworks. Fiddler marks the end of another major tradition for me: the first show I've been in that mom's not here to cheer me on. But she was on this earth for 102 years, loving music, theatre and me...that's a long-standing tradition!

As we wrap up another season here at Curtain Call, I'm most thankful to all of you here who make regular theatre-going one of your traditions. Great art and culture rely on this tradition - after all, it has persevered since the beginning of the modern theatre of the ancient Greks.

Outdoor, free summer Shakespeare is another long-standing tradition, and we are thrilled to continue that here with our 21st summer out on "the green."  The Taming of the Shrew will play on our own version of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre stage July 11 through 21. I hope you'll join us!

Thank you for joining us for Fiddler on the Roof...I hope to see you here again, soon.

Sincerely,

Lou Ursone

Executive Director

PS - When you watch the wonderfully creative BOTTLE DANCE by Jerome Robbins, know that there is no Velcro nor magnets...these guys are doing the dance legitimately balancing those bottles as intended 60 years ago in the original Broadway production.

Program

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof touches audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty.

Producer's Note

When mounting a show, a director's vision is combined with the ideas of set, lighting and costume designers, to create a feel for the world they're creating.  With shows involving military, we know that we don't have the resources to be able to completely and accurately recreate all service medals, patches, etc., and mean that as no disrespect to the service of our military personnel past, present and future.

Equally, when creating a show set at a specific time in history and/or dealing with specific cultures, we do our best in creating a feel for those periods and customs. Again, no disrespect is meant in creating our designers' vision within our limited resources.

Curtain Call, Inc.
