This year’s theme, Sustainable Lake County, investigates environmentalism and sustainability through the lens of the arts and humanities. We will collaborate across the college and the broader Lake County community to explore how we all can live more sustainable, just, meaningful, and socially conscious lives that preserve our environment while cultivating the diverse communities that make up our region. For more information, visit www.voicesoflakecounty.com/sustainable-lake-county.
Finally, join us in further exploration and discovery by taking one of our many exciting courses in literature, creative writing, communication studies, digital media and design, philosophy, the humanities, world languages, or the vast landscape of visual and performing arts. Whatever your goal—from personal enrichment to earning a certificate or degree—we’d love to play a part in your own story of transformation!

CELEBRATION FANFARE
Composed by Steven Reineke
The orchestral version of Celebration Fanfare was composed by Steven Reineke while on Swans Island, Maine, in 1995. The fanfare commemorates Erich Kunzel’s 30th anniversary as the conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. It was the first of many commissions Reineke would receive from the Pops. The composer completed a band transcription in December 1998, under a commission from the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
OCTOBER
Composed by Eric Whitacre
Eric Whitacre wrote: “October is my favorite month. Something about the crisp autumn air and the subtle change in light always makes me a little sentimental, and as I started to sketch, I felt that same quiet beauty in the writing. The simple, pastoral melodies and subsequent harmonies are inspired by the great English romantics (Vaughan Williams and Elgar) as I felt that this style was also perfectly suited to capture the natural and pastoral soul of the season. I'm quite happy with the end result, especially because I feel there just isn't enough lush, beautiful music written for winds.”
KING KONG SOUNDTRACK HIGHLIGHTS
Composed by James Newton Howard
Arranged by Jay Bocook
Featuring a breathtaking array of special effects and a powerful soundtrack to match, the blockbuster movie "King Kong" has stomped its way into America's contemporary movie culture. This dramatic medley includes exciting chase music in addition to some of the more tender moments from the film. The "jungle drum" sequence really adds to the atmosphere of this effective and impressive arrangement.
ARABESQUE
Composed by Samuel R. Hazo
Arabesque was commissioned for the 2008 Indiana All-State Honor Band by the Indiana Bandmasters’ Association. It is a tour-de-force of Middle Eastern sounds for the contemporary wind band. From delicate and sensual soloistic writing to full blown ensemble passages with rapid fire tutti rhythms and frenzied percussion, Arabesque is a dramatic composition with depth that is sure to satisfy.
SONG (FOR BAND)
Composed by William Bolcom
William Bolcom, Pulitzer Prize winning University of Michigan faculty member, has received international acclaim for his music. Song is filled with flowing melodic lines accompanied by a bouquet of colorful harmonic figuration. This piece was written for and is dedicated to Professor Robert Reynolds in honor of his twenty-six-year tenure as Director of Bands at the University of Michigan.
CACCIA AND CHORALE
Composed by Clifton Williams
Clifton Williams provided the following program note on this work: “While it remains open to question whether music can convey any message other than a purely musical one, composers often tend to attempt philosophical, pictorial, or other aspects within a musical framework. Such is the case with Caccia and Chorale, two title words borrowed from Italian because of their allegorical significance. The first, Caccia, means hunt or chase, and is intended to reflect the preoccupation of most people in the world with a constant pursuit of materialism. The Chorale is, by contrast, an urgent and insistent plea for greater humanity, a return to religious or ethical concepts.” Knowing the seriousness of his illness when he began this work and feeling that he might not survive an impending operation, Williams intended to write only the Caccia. However, the surgery was successful, and the Chorale movement was thus composed as a personal prayer of thanksgiving along with a sincere plea for ethical regeneration by all humanity.
SYMPHONIC SUITE FROM JURASSIC WORLD
Composed by Michael Giacchino
Arranged by Jay Bocook
From the blockbuster hit movie “Jurassic World” comes evocative new themes by composer Michael Giacchino presented spectacularly in this powerful arrangement. This spine-tingling symphonic setting is haunting, dramatic, and totally entertaining.
THE FAIREST OF THE FAIR
Composed by John Philip Sousa
Edited by Frederick Fennell
The title for Fairest of the Fair (1908) is something of a pun: over many years playing regularly at the annual Boston Food Fair, Sousa repeatedly noticed, but never met, an especially attractive young woman at one of the displays. Needing a new march for his band’s usual appearance there, he used this stranger as inspiration, composing an ode to the fairest lady at Boston Food Fair.
