Passion. Innovation. Diversity. Connection. Community.
These aren’t just hallmarks of the arts; they’re woven into the very fabric of the College of Lake County and our commitment to offering, “equitable, high-quality education, cultural enrichment, and partnerships to advance the diverse communities we serve.” Within the Communication Arts Division, we champion the belief that the arts have a unique power to reflect, unite, and transform the world by bringing diverse voices and experiences together through shared storytelling and celebration!
This season, we’re thrilled to showcase a rich array of artistic, intellectual, and cultural experiences. Revel in our exceptional music, theatre and dance performances; immerse yourself in art exhibits hosted in the beautiful Wright Community Gallery; explore our dynamic film and literary series; or engage in one of our many free community workshops and events. Each offering underscores the breadth and diversity of talent at CLC and within the wider community we serve. To learn more about our distinguished lineup for the 2023-24 season, please visit www.clcillinois.edu/events/the-arts-events.
In the coming months, we also invite you to delve into the “Voices of Lake County,” a multi-year, interdisciplinary project spanning the Communication Arts, Fine Arts, and Humanities Division. This year’s theme, Sustainable Lake County, investigates environmentalism and sustainability through the lens of the arts and humanities. We will collaborate across the college and the broader Lake County community to explore how we all can live more sustainable, just, meaningful, and socially conscious lives that preserve our environment while cultivating the diverse communities that make up our region. For more information, visit www.voicesoflakecounty.com/sustainable-lake-county.
Finally, join us in further exploration and discovery by taking one of our many exciting courses in literature, creative writing, communication studies, digital media and design, philosophy, the humanities, world languages, or the vast landscape of visual and performing arts. Whatever your goal—from personal enrichment to earning a certificate or degree—we’d love to play a part in your own story of transformation!
Thank you for coming to the College of Lake County! We are excited you’re here!

Jim Macnie of the Village Voice wrote: “Fetchingly situated between Brownian blasts and Milesian murmurs, the trumpeter’s lines cover lots of emotional breadth. It makes for a straight-ahead quintet approach that is quite willing to bend the rules to suit a tune’s forgotten corners. His poetry with standard ballads might hush this room. Evidently, he does know what love is.”
Tim Hagans was nominated for Grammy awards for Best Instrumental Composition for “Box of Cannoli” from THE AVATAR SESSIONS (2010 Fuzzy Music); Best Contemporary Jazz CD for RE ANIMATION (2000 Blue Note) and ANIMATION IMAGINATION (1999 Blue Note).
Tim Hagans has performed and recorded with Thad Jones, Ernie Wilkins, Joe Lovano, Bob Belden and Dexter Gordon. It was Thad Jones who encouraged Tim to write music, and Hagans' first composition appeared on a Thad Jones Eclipse LP.
For three years he was a member of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. For fifteen years he was artistic director and composer-in-residence for the Norrbotten Big Band, traveling to Sweden to perform, conduct and arrange projects with guests including Rufus Reid, Randy Brecker,
Peter Erskine, and Dave Liebman. THE AVATAR SESSIONS CD features music he created during that tenure, performed by Tim Hagans, the Norrbotten Big Band, and the above-mentioned guest artists.
Hagans is the featured soloist on the soundtrack by Howard Shore for the movie The Score, starring Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando. In 2001 he was the subject of an hour- long documentary made for Swedish television entitled Boogaloo Road). In June 2012 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
Hagans was the recipient of the 2008 IAJE/ASCAP Established Composer commission and was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Composition Grant. Other notable commissions include the Barent’s Composers Orchestra in 2009; NDR Big Band in Hamburg in 2001, 2004, 2013 & 2016; Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra in 2003, 2007 and 2014; and the UMO Jazz Orchestra in Helsinki in 1997 and 2005. He has composed music for Christer Engberg’s play The Hostage and for Jazz Baltica.
In 2007 he began performing and composing for the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble, a contemporary dance company dedicated to the use of live original music in performance and the integration of musicians into the stage imagery. In 2009 he created music for GET OUTSIDE, an evening-length work for the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble in collaboration with the Norrbotten Big Band. In 2010 he collaborated with author, actor, and filmmaker Peter Josyph on THE WAY OF THE TRUMPET, a performance work for improvised trumpet and haiku.

We respectfully acknowledge that the College of Lake County is on the ancestral homelands of the Kickapoo, Peoria, Potawatomi and other native peoples. We recognize the longstanding significance of these lands for indigenous peoples past, present and future. Historical awareness of indigenous exclusion and erasure is critically important to preventing further atrocities. The College of Lake County pledges to acknowledge the grave injustices of the past and pledges to create awareness and advance education that invites truth.
