In the coming months, we also invite you to delve into the “Voices of Lake County,” a multi-year, interdisciplinary project spanning the Communication Arts, Fine Arts, and Humanities Division. This year’s theme, Sustainable Lake County, investigates environmentalism and sustainability through the lens of the arts and humanities. We will collaborate across the college and the broader Lake County community to explore how we all can live more sustainable, just, meaningful, and socially conscious lives that preserve our environment while cultivating the diverse communities that make up our region. For more information, visit www.voicesoflakecounty.com/sustainable-lake-county.

Finally, join us in further exploration and discovery by taking one of our many exciting courses in literature, creative writing, communication studies, digital media and design, philosophy, the humanities, world languages, or the vast landscape of visual and performing arts. Whatever your goal—from personal enrichment to earning a certificate or degree—we’d love to play a part in your own story of transformation!

Thank you for coming to the College of Lake County! We are excited you’re here!

ALLELUIA! LAUDAMUS, TE
Composed by Alfred Reed

Alleluia! Laudamus Te was commissioned by the Malone College Concert Band in Canton, Ohio for its Third Annual Band Festival.

The work is a canticle of praise without words, the concert band being treated largely both as a single massive choir and, at times, broken down into individual sections, each functioning as a separate sub-choir or semi-chorus. The music is based on three main themes, the first being a massive chorale in the brass; the second, a long flowing line in the horns and woodwinds; and the third, a quasi-fanfare figure first heard in the trumpets and then spreading throughout the other sections of the band as it is developed.

These three themes form an arch-like, five-part design: the first two themes followed by the rhythmical third theme, which builds to a broad re-statement of the second theme (at this point joined by the organ), and this brings the music back to the first theme, which is capped by a short coda of almost overwhelming power and sonority, to round off the work in joyous triumph.  (Source: Program Note by composer)

AWAY IN A MANGER
Composed by James R. Murray
Arranged by Julie Giroux

This classic carol has been set to multiple melodies. This arrangement uses the tune “Mueller” as its basis. (Source: Composer’s Score)

CHRISTMAS ON BROADWAY
Arranged by John Higgins

Enjoy this medley of holiday songs: It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas; Pine Cones and Holly Berries; Toyland; March of the Toys; My Favorite Things; We Need a Little Christmas and God Bless Us Everyone.

EL CAMINO REAL

Composed by Alfred Reed

El Camino Real (literally "The Royal Road" or "The King's Highway") was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the 581st Air Force Band (AFRES) and its commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler. Composed during the latter half of 1984 and completed in early '85, it bears the subtitle "A Latin Fantasy."

The music is based on a series of chord progressions common to countless generations of Spanish flamenco (and other) guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have captivated millions of music lovers throughout the world. These progressions and the resulting key relationships have become practically synonymous with what we feel to be the true Spanish idiom. Together with the folk melodies they have underscored, in part derived by a procedure known to musicians as the "melodizing of harmony," a vast body of what most people would consider authentic Spanish music.

The first section of the music is based upon the dance form known as the Jota, while the second, contrasting section is derived from the Fandango, but here altered considerably in both time and tempo from its usual form. Overall, the music follows a traditional three-part pattern: fast-slow-fast.

The first public performance of El Camino Real took place on April 15th, 1985, in Sarasota, Florida, with the 581st Air Force Band under the direction of Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler.

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS

Arranged by Larry Clark

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a 1966 Christmas animated musical comedy television special directed by Chuck Jones. It is based on the eponymous children's book by Dr. Seuss, the story of the Grinch trying to take away Christmas from the townsfolk of Whoville below his mountain hideaway. Originally telecast in the United States on CBS on December 18, 1966, it went on to become a perennial holiday special. Directed by Chuck Jones, it features the voice of Boris Karloff.

Of all the Dr. Seuss stories, possibly none is more delightfully charming than the take on that mean old man who disliked Christmas so much that he stole all the presents, the toys, and the Christmas trees. As should befall any villain, he is transformed and his heart "grew three times its size." This is a superior holiday medley with two great songs: Welcome Christmas and You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.

A MOST WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS

Arranged by Robert Sheldon

Some of the most popular Christmas selections of all time are included in this delightful arrangement. Robert Sheldon has included Winter Wonderland; I'll Be Home for Christmas; Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Composed by Danny Elfman

Arranged by Michael Brown

The classic animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas features deliciously sinister music by composer Danny Elfman. A unique offering for the holiday season, this appealing medley for band includes Overture; Christmas Eve Montage; Sally's Song; This Is Halloween and End Title.

SLEIGH RIDE

Composed by Leroy Anderson

Sleigh Ride is a light orchestra standard whose music was composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had formed the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946, and he finished the work in February 1948. The original recordings were instrumental versions. The lyrics, about riding in a sleigh and other fun wintertime activities, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. A selection of the artists who have recorded it include Herb Alpert, The Andrews Sisters, The Carpenters, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Debbie Gibson, The Muppets, and Andy Williams.
