A Message From the Chair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Columbus Symphony Supporter,

Thank you for joining us as we continue the 2023-24 Masterworks series with four outstanding programs.

Stravinsky Firebird Suite, February 3-4, will take audiences through a dramatic and fantastic journey with a suite from Stravinsky’s folklore-inspired ballet. Steven Banks, one of today’s leading classical saxophonists, will perform Henri Tomasi’s lyrical Concert for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra, and the program will also include William Dawson’s 1934 Negro Folk Symphony and a selection of spirituals for choir and orchestra, featuring The Worship and Praise Chorale.

Guest conductor Carl St. Clair will lead the Columbus Symphony for Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1, February 23-24. Pianist Claire Huangci will return to Columbus with Tchaikovsky’s monumental first piano concerto, and Alone Together, a recent work by John Wineglass, will musically address social issues faced during the pandemic. Brahms’ magnificent Symphony No. 4 will complete the program.

For Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 1, March 22-23, Finnish-American violinist Elina Vähälä will make her Columbus Symphony debut, performing Jean Sibelius’ celebrated violin concerto. The program will also feature Rachmaninoff’s powerful and expressive Symphony No. 1, and the overture to Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Beethoven, Mozart & Haydn, April 5-6, will include works by three of classical music’s titans: Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 “The Bear,” Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 “Paris,” and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by Sara Davis Buechner, making her Columbus Symphony debut.

On behalf of the entire Columbus Symphony family, thank you for your exceptional support of our orchestra this season, and thank you for joining us to experience the power of music together.

Please enjoy tonight’s performance!
