Dear Columbus Symphony Supporter,
Thank you for joining us as we continue the 2022-23 Masterworks series with four outstanding programs.
Beethoven, Mozart & Haydn, January 20-22, will showcase three composers who changed music forever. The musicians of the Columbus Symphony will show off their talents in the intimate and expressive music of the Classical period, including Beethoven’s Leonore 3 Overture, Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony, and Haydn’s “Military” Symphony.
Rising star Aubree Oliverson will join us for Dvořák’s New World, February 3-4, masterfully performing Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. The program will also feature Carlos Simon’s This Land, a 2019 work inspired by Emma Lazarus’ poem The New Colossus, and Dvořák’s inspirational Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”
Next will be Schubert Symphony No. 4, “Tragic,” February 17-18, which will open with Andante ma non troppo from Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3, which in 1940 was the first symphonic work composed by a Black woman to be performed by a major American orchestra. Principal Clarinetist David Thomas will perform Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata, and the program will conclude with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 in C minor, “Tragic.”
On March 3-4, Mahler Symphony No. 9 brings this epic work, which moves seamlessly between intimate sensuality and grand majesty, with emotional melodies, lush harmonies, and large orchestration. One of the all-time greats of the Classical repertoire, this is a must-see performance!
On behalf of the entire Columbus Symphony family, thank you for your exceptional support of our orchestra, and thank you for joining us to experience the power of music together.
Please enjoy tonight’s performance!
