Thank you for joining us as we continue the 2022-23 Masterworks series with four outstanding programs.
Variations on Nutcracker Suite, March 17-18, features Columbus native and Juilliard graduate Aaron Diehl making his Columbus Symphony debut, with his complex and layered sense of artistry on full display with the orchestra as they perform Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. The program will also include two variations on The Nutcracker Suite, by Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington, and Julia Perry’s Study for Orchestra.
Principal Viola Karl Pedersen will make his Columbus Symphony solo debut performing Berlioz’s Harold in Italy as part of Carmen Suite, April 14-15. The program will also include Marcos Fernandez’s America (A homage to Bernstein), commissioned to be performed during the centenary celebrations for Leonard Bernstein in 2018, and a virtuosic arrangement by Rodion Shchedrin of Bizet’s Carmen Suite, featuring strings and a menagerie of percussion instruments.
Next will be Rachmaninoff & Tchaikovsky, May 5-6, featuring Zhu Wang performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, perhaps the most famous work in the piano concerto repertoire. Rounding out the program is Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and Mussorgsky’s Sunrise on Moscow River.
For the final concert of the 2022-23 Masterworks series, we will celebrate the end of an era, as Ronald Jenkins takes the podium for his last concert as Chorus Director of the Columbus Symphony Chorus, in Welcome to Spring, May 19-20. This unforgettable concert will feature music from Great Britain, with favorites such as “Nimrod” from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, and will also honor Memorial Day with Vaughn Williams’ powerful cantata, Dona Nobis Pacem.
On behalf of the entire Columbus Symphony family, thank you for your exceptional support of our orchestra this season, and thank you for joining us to experience the power of music together.
Please enjoy tonight’s performance!
