Q: How did you get your start in live entertainment and how has it helped you as the Creative Director for Cirque Dreams Holidaze?
Rye: I started as a child actor, did a lot of TV and commercials, but I only liked doing live theater. So I focused on that, went to school, worked on Broadway and then was brought into Ringling Bros and Disney. I live the greatest life a kid like me could ever want! And having that whimsical nature is what can create magic in a magical show like this one.
Q: How does this show differ from other holiday productions?
Rye: The goal with these shows was to give all three productions (two tours and a limited residency in Denver) a distinct feel. They are their own things. In one show it’s about a family. In another, it’s a cirque retelling of The Nutcracker. The other one is a comedy about Santa’s kids realizing they are on the naughty list. Take these unique twists and give it the cirque feel - and you have magic!
Q: Who inspires you as a director and/or performer?
Rye: The performers, crew, and creative folks around me. My mentor really embedded in me the philosophy of “Best Idea Wins” doesn’t matter if I didn’t think of it - if it creates the most wonderful show, that’s the route we are going with!
Q: What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as a performer and/or Director?
Rye: Three Unique Christmas Cirque Shows in 2 Weeks. Boom.
Q: What might audiences find interesting as a fun, behind-the-scenes tidbit about you?
Rye: I was a pro wrestler, a circus ringmaster, a Broadway performer, and a singing waiter.
Q: How do you find the talent for Cirque Dreams Holidaze?
Rye: The producers are amazing at finding new talent and giving voices to people who might not usually do these shows. Sometimes we find them and sometimes they find us!
Q: Many people have dreamed of becoming a Cirque performer. What would your advice be to them in pursuing this career goal?
Rye: Be prepared to work your booty off and bring plenty of “Icy Hot." But I promise it will be worth it!
Q: What is your personal favorite holiday memory as a child?
Rye: Christmas with my family. I have a giant family and Christmas was the time of year where I got to spend time with my cousins, see Santa, exchange gifts, and reenact scenes from “Clue” and the “The Glo Friends Save Christmas.”
