A Note from John Jeter
Thank you for attending our final concert of the 2022-2023 season, Native American Legends, featuring a selection of works by Louis W. Ballard. This concert and the recording to follow could not have been possible without the help of the following people:

Simone Ballard and the Ballard family, for trusting us with their grandfather's music and educational materials throughout this project;

Dr. Erik Ettinger, for providing his Ballard expertise in lectures, archives, program notes, and throughout the rehearsal process;

The Fleisher Collection in Philadelphia, who edited and compiled the unpublished works of Ballard;

Dr. Christina Giacona and Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, for introducing me to the work of Louis W. Ballard and his granddaughter, Simone Ballard;

the research of Dr. Christina Giacona that laid the foundation of our project;

composers Chris Prather and Patrick Conlon for logistical support with music preparation;

The Walter O. Caldwell Foundation, without whose initial support this project would not have been possible;

Mercy and ArcBest, for the support that pushed this endeavor to fruition;

and a special thank you to Arthur Busby for his wonderful assistance in securing musicians for this Native American music project.

The Louis Ballard Project

This season includes The Louis Ballard Project, an initiative by the Fort Smith Symphony to promote the work of Quapaw-Cherokee composer and educator Louis Ballard and other living Indigenous composers. We are bringing Ballard’s music to chamber music concerts, elementary classrooms, and the orchestra stage. Our project culminates in April, 2023, when we will record a selection of Ballard’s orchestral works for commercial distribution through Naxos Records.
