Calorcito del Tropico
Guido López Gavilán

Calorcito del Trópico is a work inspired by elements of folkloric Cuban music and is dedicated to the Knoxville Symphony String Quartet. Throughout the piece, distinctive rhythmic motifs evoke the rich Afro-Cuban traditions of the island.

Following a brilliant and energetic introduction, the music unfolds into a section dominated by the mambo, with its lively, syncopated pulse. This rhythmic drive persists throughout the work, interweaving with patterns drawn from the rumba. The resulting fusion creates a vibrant sound world that conveys both the joy and the warmth inherent in tropical music.

The KSO’s 9 for 90 initiative celebrates its 90th season by commissioning and premiering nine new works presented across the organization’s artistic programming, from Masterworks and Chamber concerts to Youth Ensembles and the Q and Concertmaster series.
