Director's Letter

Welcome to THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE!

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE was conceived by Rebecca Feldman and performed by The Farm - A New-York based improvisational troupe. Soon after, the improv piece became a full-length musical, premiering in 2004 featuring a book by Rachel Sheinkin and music by William Finn. After its tryout at Barrington Stage in Massachusetts, the musical moved Off-Broadway in 2005, and opened on Broadway four months later directed by theatrical titan, Jampes Lapine. The musical received two Tony Awards - Best Book of a Musical (Rachel Sheinkin) and Best Featured Actor (Dan Fogler) and performed a total of 1,136 performances and 21 previews.

William Finn is a renowned musical theater composer, and one of my favorites. His work demonstrates the parallel between joy and despair, hilarity and heartbreak, and the comfort and affliction of life. I admire his unapologetic sarcasm and dry sense of humor, which is expressed throughout his canon of work.

It has been an honor to bring this musical to life, and navigate this quirky, intricate material. Here at Landmark, we have carefully crafted our Bee, and it would not be possible without this brilliant cast. This cast seeks out the vibrancy and individuality within these characters. These characters are incredibly riotous and silly, while full of complexities and expectations. I hope these characters appear familiar to you, or even relatable.

Thank you for supporting live theater here in Thomaston, CT. Connecticut has an enthusiastic theater community full of talent, kindness, and passion. The performing arts are a gift to our community, and the community it brings.

We introduce you to Putnam County!

Sincerely,
Michael Ricciardone
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Director
