Welcome Theater Friends,

The Kingdom of Duloc—and its surrounding forests and swamp—are steeped in the nostalgia of my youth. I remember going to the Southington Drive-In with my parents and being instantly hooked by the sight of a sarcastic potty-mouthed ogre farting, picking wedgies, and stomping through the swamp to the tune of Smash Mouth’s “All Star.” At the time, it had an edge you didn’t often find in animation.

While plenty of animated films have since tried to be “outside the box,” the message of Shrek continues to resonate with new generations. It’s no surprise that Shrek found its way to the stage—it speaks to something deeper than most fairy tales. We’ve all had moments where we felt like outsiders, where the world told us we didn’t quite fit because of how we look, talk, love, or believe. And like Shrek, we’ve learned how easy it is to build walls and call them home—to pretend we don’t need connection, when deep down, we do.

Shrek reminds us that real beauty isn’t about appearances—it’s about honesty, kindness, and the courage to be ourselves. It challenges the fairy tale mold, showing us that love and acceptance come not from perfection, but from authenticity. It encourages us to embrace our quirks, show compassion to others, and find strength in what makes us different. And of course—if we forget these lessons, we may just find a fire-breathing dragon ready to roast us to a crisp.

One last thing—I’d like to dedicate my work on this production to my father, whom I lost last year. He introduced me to theater, had an incredible sense of humor, and always encouraged me to be exactly who I was.
