Director's Note

Every year I sit down to write this message to all of you, and every year I talk about how special it is to be able to do the work that I do. That message still remains true.  Working with young students and showing them the love of theatre truly is such a special role, probably the greatest role I’ve ever played. But this show has become one of my favorite experiences I’ve ever had being a director.

We took a leap of faith on this production; it was new, never been done by our production team, was more unique than shows we’ve done in the past, and incredibly challenging.  However, it was a challenge that we believed our kids could pull off. And to say that they pulled this off would be the understatement of a lifetime. The characters, the dances, the music, and the comradery that this show pulled out of these young performers have left me speechless.

When you think about Beetlejuice, most people think about these classic movie memories:  Netherworld, Sandworm, Day-O, and a silly and spooky plot and characters. All of these things are true, and they WILL be on our stage. But when I think of Beetlejuice, I think about the underlying themes and messages it evokes: what it means to be uniquely you, finding friendships in the most unsuspecting of places, and realizing that home is not always a house, but rather a group of people who love you and accept you for exactly who you are. To me, Beetlejuice, in the silliest of ways, has become a metaphor for what theatre has been and always will be, a home. A home to those who need a safe place to land, a home to those who need a group of people who are accepting and inclusive, and a home where they will never, ever be alone. In the show's final moment, I hope you feel the power of home and what it truly means.

Thank you to Mrs. Marques for always being by my side, as we’ve been in this together since the very beginning, and I will be forever grateful for the home we have created for our students. Mr. McGowan, you are single-handedly the greatest asset to our production team. We would be lost without you and all of your expertise. Thank you for always thinking of EVERYTHING and ALWAYS having our back, we love you. Jia, we are so lucky to have you officially joining our production team; our students adore you, your choreography is flawless, and we are so much better with you here! Ava Nicosia- my right hand woman, I am SO proud of the incredible work you have done as Stage Manager, you are made for this role. I honestly don’t know how I would have managed this production without you. Your leadership and dedication to the stage, your peers, and to the show have blown me away. You are EXCELLENT. To the cast and crew, thank you for always being exactly who you are and ALWAYS showing up. You are beautiful, talented, and oh so loved. Thank you for letting us be a part of your story.
