Director's Letter

“Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos”
– Stephen Sondheim.

When embarking on a new production as a first time director, you are constantly reminded that you have no idea what you’re doing. Just as often, you are reminded that you know exactly what you are doing. There is no right answer when it comes to making something, but as long as you have the right team and creatives in your corner, the “right” answer will always present itself. This process has been so eye opening, fun, scary, and everything in between. Unfortunately, not everything can always go as planned. As you will see in the bio section of the playbill, I am also the actor playing Gerry Goffin. I had not intended to be anything other than the director of this production, but due to unforeseen circumstances the decision had to be made to step in. I’d like to take this opportunity to get on my soap box if I may: If you are interested in getting involved with theatre, do it. There is a place for you, and you will be welcomed with open arms. Often, we are blessed with a fraction of the deep pool of talent that our little part of CT has to offer. There is always room for more. Please audition, support, and volunteer. We are necessary. We are important. We are a family.

A little about me. Coming from a “Theatre Family”, musical theatre was always around. My parents along with my sister performed regularly throughout my youth. I got dragged to A LOT of rehearsals, against my will most times, but was always enamored with seeing people take on a new life on stage. As a relatively shy kid, I stayed away from the whole getting on stage thing... until I found the drums. The drums were a perfect ticket into performing for me. I could show off, have a ton of fun, and still be hidden enough that I wouldn’t be embarrassed. As I got older, theatre was always in the back of my mind, I just didn’t have the confidence to get there. Fast forward to 2011. I was cast in Les Miserables with the local teen theatre in Bristol, and clearly never looked back. Over the past 10+ years, I’ve had the privilege of getting to learn from so many of the talented people that we are so lucky to have in the NWCT theatre scene. I’ve had the opportunity to play bucket-list roles such as Jack Kelly in NEWSIES, Guy in ONCE, Jesus in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Drew in ROCK OF AGES, and The Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald in ASSASSINS to name a few. Although I am not leaving the stage (clearly), I’m so excited for this next chapter behind the table. I can only hope to impart what I have learned over the years and continue to learn and grow as an Actor and Director. Thank you Jeff and Andrea for the opportunity.

I’d like to take a moment to thank my incredible production team for all of their hard work and support throughout this whirlwind of a process. To my cast, I could never properly thank you all enough for your patience, trust, and ability to tell this story with such beauty and grace. What you all bring to this show is ever astounding to me. I may have directed you, but this show is defined by the bits of yourselves you have woven so beautifully into this story. For that, all I can say is THANK YOU.

To Carole: Thank you for the music. Thank you for your story. Thank you for everything.

Now, if you don’t mind... allow us to transport you back to the early days of one of the world’s most prolific songwriters. Please sing, dance, laugh, and cry along with us as we tell the story of a plain jane from Brooklyn who found her way into our lives
through the power of music. Sit back, relax, and enjoy BEAUTIFUL – THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL.
